The Power of "No": How To Avoid Distractions On The Path

January 13, 20244 min read

Say No To Everything That Is Not Your Path

You have a mission. A goal. A reason why you are here.

This clarity provides a lens through which to interpret your reality. With this singularity of focus you can see the constituent elements of your world:

What the mission is.
What the tools are that will aid the journey.
What the obstacles are which impede the journey.
The heaven you work toward.
The hell you run from.

Clarity of purpose is the antidote to paralysis of choice.

Once you find the path, the challenge is to stay on it. There are so many shiny objects vying for our attention. So many worthwhile endeavors one can pursue. All of these are pursued at the cost of higher living, they are placeholders for true meaning.

There is your path…and there is everything else.

The Path

Mandatory listening for those hellbent on fulfilling their dreams is Neil Gaiman’s commencement address, “Make Good Art”. He spoke of his ultimate goal, becoming a professional writer, as a distant mountain. When presented with career decisions, he simply asked:

“Does this take me towards or away from the mountain?”

This is the filter that provides true clarity. This is the power of premade decisions. By clearly defining the goal, the path reveals itself. And we now have a built-in radar to keep us on that path.

You must protect the path. Guard the path. Say no to everything which is not your path.

The greatest obstacles to the fulfillment of our vision are not haters, unfair circumstances, or bad luck – they are distractions. All the little things that derail your attention from the goal.

The good ideas that are in the realm of your goal but are not the goal – distraction.
The good actions which don’t affect the primary levers of change – distraction.
Everything which does not spur forward movement on the path – distraction.

We only have so much time, you and I. Henry Rollins said it best:

“No such thing as spare time, no such thing as free time, no such thing as down time. All you got is life time."

I use a simple filter when accessing how I use my time, “Am I consuming or producing?”

We only have a handful of decades to produce. To become. To manifest what we are and tangibly shift our corner of the world.

The future will be won by those who can avoid distraction. Humanity advances when we remain steadfast on the goal and press on to its completion.

Unseen Forces

A dear friend of mind often says, “you don’t want to be the guy who is always about to do something.”

If that didn’t trigger you, great, you’re on the path. If it did, consider this an opportunity for reflection.

Many talk. Few fulfill. Fulfillment requires resolution, a commitment to the mission at hand. To claim the goal, to reach the mountain, you must say no to everything which is not your mountain.

And that’s most things. When you have clarity of purpose, and the realm of possibilities shrinks to one, all other paths are in error.

I’m perpetually in awe of how difficult it is to build things and how easy it is to destroy them. A good man’s reputation can be shattered in a single act. A tree that takes a century to grow can be wiped out overnight by a bad storm. A meaningful relationship can end with a well-pointed sentence.

But the degradation of our path is more subtle than this.

Most destruction doesn’t come in one fell swoop back to zero. It happens through pernicious distractions and subtle course corrections over time. A slight shift here. A little rabbit hole explored there.

Dreams are stolen one wasted hour at a time. Productivity is stymied, not by lazy days, but by busy days aimed at the wrong levers.

The Distinction

When we are fortunate enough to find the path, the next great adventure in life is to stay on the path.

This is a different kind of skill.

Finding the path required novelty, searching, great courage for new adventures, and above all, openness. Staying on the path requires routine, blinders, resolve through boredom, and above all, remaining closed.

These are different skills. Finding the path is the adventure of saying yes; staying on the path is the perpetual practice of saying no.

No protects dreams.
No preserves times.
No is honoring yourself.

Say no to all which impedes your path. This is most things. And what it does, the real magic in this, is that all the “no’s” you say will give power to your “yes”.

Yes is reserved for what matters.
Yes is backed by energy, enthusiasm, and capacity.
Yes is concentration.

When your no has teeth, your yes has fangs.

Say "no" to everything which is not your path; there is no greater "yes" than this.

FAQ

These are the common questions we get from prospective students about our program

How do I know if a Performance Coach is right for me?

The most successful people – in all areas of life – have a coach. We need a mentor, a guide, someone who has been there before and can save us the pain of failing and wandering without progress toward a goal.

If you are sincere in your growth and have the resources for this type of relationship, this will accelerate your progress and improve the quality of your life. Guaranteed.

What does the coaching relationship entail?

Should you be selected for the program, you will begin with an introductory assessment in which Chris will take you through his “Big Four Assessment” to get a clear picture of your current status and what you would like to achieve.

After onboarding, Chris will give you your personal transformation roadmap and provide weekly support as you run the process and achieve your goal. You will connect with Chris for weekly zoom calls as well as having unlimited communication on a private channel.

How do I know it’s worth the investment?

We use a simple equation for this. Decide the value of achieving your goal. Put a financial number to it. “If I achieve “x” in the next 12 weeks, that would be worthy “y”.

If your goal is worth more than the investment for coaching, then it’s safe to say the investment is worth it!

What if I have more than one goal I want to achieve?

Great! Chris uses his “Big Four” methodology to assess the primary areas of your life and align on your needs/desires in what matters most.

Most clients have 1 or more areas of their lives they would like to improve. Together, you and Chris will create your transformation roadmap to achieve all these goals simultaneously.

What if I want to work with Chris beyond the 12-week agreement?

Most clients choose to continue working with Chris beyond their original agreement. Chris limits first-time clients to the initial 12-week program to ensure that we have a right fit before making a longer term coach-client relationship.

For those who are coachable and committed to progress, Chris happily continues the coaching relationship.

How do I know the program will work?

Between coaching, the books, and speaking, Chris has served thousands and thousands of people committed to personal development. Through years of experience, he has refined his coaching methodology to the essentials that create immediate results.

Chris’s Performance Coaching is highly effective in accelerating personal transformation.
